ALGIERS – The Thematic Agency for Research in Science and Technology (ATRST) has initiated thematic research projects in the field of seawater desalination, accepting funding and support for 18 projects in the first phase, as announced in an ATRST statement on Monday.
“This initiative is in line with the policy of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to ensure water security, which is now threatened by the impacts of climate change,” through a policy that involves various scientific expertise from within and outside the country, the statement elaborated.
Furthermore, this policy aims to implement a collaborative approach between the scientific research and technological development sectors.
In this context, ATRST issued a nationwide call for research project proposals on seawater desalination, receiving a total of 33 research projects, out of which 18 were selected for funding and support.
The project holders will collaborate with various economic operators in the field, including seawater desalination stations, the Algerian Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL), the Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the National Civil Engineering and Building Company (ENGCB) subsidiary of Sonatrach, the Algerian Energy Company (AEC), the National Electrochemical Products Company (ENPEC), the National Water Desalination Agency (ANDE), the National Integrated Water Resources Management Agency (AGIRE), the Cosider Group, and many other enterprises.
The selected themes encompass aspects related to analysis, pretreatment, treatment, post-treatment, filters used in reverse osmosis, the environmental impacts of seawater desalination stations on marine ecosystems along the Algerian coast, as well as the application of renewable energy sources (RES) in seawater desalination.
