In a statement to APS (Algerian Press Service), Lieutenant Abdat Youcef, the spokesperson for the General Directorate of Civil Protection, reported a staggering toll of “514 deaths and 17,802 injuries in 15,309 road accidents nationwide during the period from May 1st to July 31st, 2023.”
According to the same official, these accidents have been attributed to factors such as speeding, reckless maneuvers, and irresponsible behavior displayed by certain drivers, particularly younger ones during wedding celebrations.
Moreover, failure to adhere to safety measures by motorcyclists, particularly the non-usage of helmets, and dangerous overtaking on highways and congested roads have also contributed to the alarming number of traffic accidents.
Despite awareness campaigns conducted by the Civil Protection services and their partners, the recorded figures remain “worrisome,” especially during the summer season, as explained by Mr. Abdat. He urges citizens to exercise responsibility and vigilance to prevent further accidents.
