President of the Republic Announces Revision of Political Parties Law

ALGIERS – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has announced the upcoming revision of the law concerning political parties, emphasizing that the common denominator for all political factions, regardless of their orientations, should be “national unity and the Declaration of November 1st.”

During his periodic interview with representatives of national media, broadcasted on Saturday evening on national television channels and radio stations, the President clarified that the law related to political parties would be revised. He stressed that parties “are free to outline their own political agendas, but must share the common principles of national unity and the November 1st Declaration, which calls for the establishment of a democratic and social state.”

“Anything that strengthens the domestic front and aligns with the national agenda is welcome,” he supported. In this context, he called for “putting an end to old methods” in partisan activities and focusing on “effective action based on the mobilization of activists in the street, which, since the authentic and blessed Hirak movement, cannot be deviated from its path.”

Furthermore, President Tebboune touched upon some points of divergence with political parties regarding issues on which, he stated, “he cannot agree.” This included the call from some political factions for the release of individuals involved in embezzlement and diversion of public funds abroad if they cooperate in their recovery.

“He who has stolen must pay,” as beyond the financial aspect, it is a moral issue, affirmed the President. He also highlighted that investigations conducted during the last elections of elected assemblies, particularly the National People’s Assembly (APN), had revealed “the attempt of the ‘band’ to present 750 corrupt candidates to access the Parliament.”

Regarding the social aspect, the President mentioned that it’s another point of disagreement with certain parties. He stated, “We have achieved many things that nobody had claimed, all driven by our concern to distribute the country’s wealth fairly among citizens.”
