Niger Crisis: Tebboune Strongly Rejects Military Intervention by Algeria

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, held his periodic interview with representatives of national media. During this meeting, the Head of State addressed several issues related to national, regional, and international current affairs, notably Algeria’s stance regarding the situation in Niger.

In this regard, President Tebboune advocated for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Niger, reaffirming the necessity of a return to constitutional legitimacy. “We are ready to assist Niger if asked,” he emphasized. Regarding the political and security crisis that followed the coup against President Mohamed Bazoum, A. Tebboune acknowledged that this situation posed a “direct threat” to our country. However, the Head of State ruled out any military intervention by Algeria in Niger.
“We categorically refuse the option of military intervention… I invite reasonable people to look at the situation in countries where military interventions have taken place… Military intervention does not solve any problem,” he insisted. Tebboune’s message to countries considering military intervention in Niger: “You are on the wrong path!”

Concerning the danger looming over Algeria from its southern borders (Mali, Niger, Libya), the President assured that the army is prepared to confront any force approaching our borders. However, he explained that it was not conceivable for Algeria to close its borders with its entire neighborhood.

Later, A. Tebboune stated that no solution could exclude Algeria from the equation, as our country is the most affected. He thus wanted to deliver a direct message to countries considering military intervention in the region. “You are on the wrong path,” he declared. “Algeria, from its independence until today, has never shed the blood of a neighboring or brotherly country. It’s a principle! Algeria will never use force against its neighbors, no matter the circumstances!” President Tebboune reiterated.

The Head of State concluded his response with an affirmative and reassuring speech: “Regardless of the scenario in Niger, I am confident that Nigeriens respect Algeria and will not approach Algerian borders. They are our brothers and will remain so. I am very clear.”
