NAIROBI – The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council is holding a meeting on Monday to discuss the “evolution of the situation in Niger and efforts to address it,” the continental organization announced in a statement.
The meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council, the body responsible for conflicts and security matters within the AU, is taking place at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, as specified by the same source.
As a reminder, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU), Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed “concern” last Friday regarding the detention conditions of Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum.
“Such treatment of a democratically elected president through a regular electoral process is unacceptable,” denounced Moussa Faki Mahamat, urging “the entire international community to concretely pool all efforts to save the life and moral and physical integrity of President Mohamed Bazoum.”
The President of the Republic of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, has been held by members of his guard since late July. Several countries and international organizations have called for the restoration of constitutional authority in the country.
