ALGER – During his official working visit to Washington, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, held discussions with his American counterpart, Mr. Antony Blinken. The talks encompassed a comprehensive review of the current state and future prospects of Algerian-American relations, as well as discussions on various regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to a statement from the ministry.
During the meetings, both ministers “extensively praised the depth and strength of the longstanding friendship and cooperative ties between Algeria and the United States of America.” They expressed satisfaction with the regular political consultations and the broadening of economic relations into new domains. The ministers highlighted promising prospects for further achievements based on the principles of friendship, trust, and mutual understanding.
In this context, Ministers Attaf and Blinken reaffirmed “the strong political will of the leaders of both countries to bolster the Algerian-American partnership and elevate it to the highest levels,” the statement added.
Furthermore, the two sides exchanged views on regional developments, with particular attention to the situations in Niger, Mali, and Libya. They emphasized “the alignment of their stances and their efforts to prioritize peaceful solutions to these crises, steering clear of the risks associated with military options,” the statement noted.
The officials also addressed “the evolving Palestinian question, taking into account the ongoing political impasse,” as well as “the latest developments in the Sahrawi issue.” They reiterated their support for the endeavors of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, to encourage both conflicting parties to engage in the UN-sponsored political process without preconditions and in good faith.
The ministers “commended the substantial convergence of their positions on the discussed matters at both the bilateral and multilateral levels,” expressing their willingness to “continue their efforts to explore the promising avenues of Algerian-American partnership and to enhance the relationship of consultation and coordination, particularly during Algeria’s upcoming tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council,” the statement concluded.
