Algeria’s Civil Protection Teams Retrieve 18 Bodies in Libya Floods

ALGERIA – Algerian Civil Protection teams actively involved in search and rescue operations in Derna, Libya, have recovered a total of 18 lifeless bodies following the devastating floods caused by the storm Daniel that struck the country hard, as reported on Friday.

In a statement to the press, Colonel Farouk Achour, Deputy Director of Statistics and Information at the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC), indicated that the latest update accounted for 18 bodies retrieved by the Civil Protection teams currently working in Libya.

Colonel Achour mentioned that search operations are ongoing in collaboration with local authorities, noting that the working conditions for search and rescue teams, including divers, are “complex and extremely difficult due to the mud, with entire homes being completely buried.”

As a reminder, following the instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria has decided to urgently send substantial humanitarian aid to Libya, including food products, medical supplies, clothing, and tents via an airlift involving eight (8) aircraft from the National People’s Army (ANP) Air Force, in solidarity with the Libyan people.

The Civil Protection teams consist of 113 personnel, encompassing various ranks and specialties, including divers, a disaster medicine specialized medical team, an operations management team, search and rescue teams, canine teams, logistics teams, and psychologists, all equipped with special flood intervention equipment.
