Algeria Advocates for Developing Countries’ Self-Sufficiency to Ensure Global Food Security

NEW YORK – Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, has called for developing countries’ self-sufficiency to ensure global food security.

The Algerian representative made these remarks during a high-level public debate on “global food insecurity driven by famine and conflicts,” held by the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, at the initiative of the United States of America, which holds the presidency of the council for the month of August.

This debate, chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, takes place at a critical moment marked by an increased number of people facing famine. This situation requires urgent measures to address the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition.

Ambassador Bendjama noted that Algeria has spared no effort to support its neighbors, especially those in the Sahel region, by providing them with necessary food and healthcare assistance to help them cope with the consequences of internal conflicts and natural disasters.

He advocated for a holistic and integrated approach that mobilizes the efforts of all stakeholders to establish resilient food systems.

In this context, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN called for sustainable financing, technology transfer, and capacity building for developing countries, particularly in Africa, to enable them to implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Prior to the opening of this public debate, the Security Council unanimously adopted a presidential statement regarding “global food insecurity induced by famine and conflicts.”

According to this statement, the Security Council expressed concern about the inadequacy of humanitarian aid and development financing, which limit efforts to combat food insecurity and the threat of famine induced by conflicts. The council also called for addressing the root causes of conflicts in accordance with international law.
